Turbo Kits

Posted by volksnut  Published in Mr. Whitey

Over the years there’s been more than a few kits built for the VW, Rajays, Schwitzers etc. How about some pictures to see what they looked like, if you have any shoot me an email and I’ll post them….volksnut@cfl.rr.com

Schwitzer buggy kitSchwitzer sedan headerSchwitzer sedan kit installedsedan Schwitzer

Here’s one of my own, it’s appears to be a 1980’s vintage Rajay/Roto-Master kit , it will be running a 2″ SU carb under the lid….The chrome header is 1 1/2″ and has a 2 1/2″ to 2″ down pipe, but no muffler, anyone know anything about it?

nice oh another nice pix

A few updates, just got done building the carb intake, T intake and rewelding the j tubes and building a new oil breather

oh mycool

UPDATE: I found the maker of the above kit Bernie Bergmann it was a blow through system used with a pair of Dells, picture found while reading…well you know where

hum

She’s in and running, next build an air cleaner and exhaust, oh notice the deck lid prop, I cut down an old wrench for the lock to grab onto

she’s in and running

here’s a good shot of the oil filler tube, I had to build a unit to clear the down tube, I cut up a old Ford valve cover for the cap and screw attachment

loud…yes

Here’s the air cleaner I ended up making, needs a little cool air though

Here’s the air cleaner installed

works good

Here’s another from Bernie, 1984 to be exact, blow through with Dells, and looks to be an old Rajay kit?

Old Brown Shoe

Posted by volksnut  Published in Mr. Whitey

Well as you all know the daughter blew up her V6 in her Mustang II…so old dads got to fix it…in it’s place will be a 2.3 4 cylinder for reasons only a dad will know

Here’s the damage….can you say “BENT”, and check out the pieces in the pan….that’s what low oil pressure and 80 mph will do

oh myI might be able to fix that…NOT

Years ago…I rode a bike

Posted by volksnut  Published in BMX

Bikes are cool, found this picture of me at 12 years old on my Sears chopper bike with 5 speed, I loved that thing

chop chop

But back in the mid 70’s I raced BMX, rode for a local bike shop and even traveled to Georgia…my mom took this picture as she was the only one that came to watch (love you mom :( ) Well found the picture of my bike I bought and paid for myself…Dirtsquirt rings a bell, but was also told it could have been a Webco?

love those socksbike.jpgyee haw

WOW! I found these under some picture frame packing (thought I threw them away)…Some of my winnings at Bear Claw BMX track in Longwood Fla.

well not first but still….

Mr. Whitey

Posted by volksnut  Published in Mr. Whitey

Well not White yet anyway….it was hurtin so, thought install some floors, front apron, little rust repair, and a little tweaking and sell it and make a few bucks…well I got in over my head

pre Mr. Whiteyoh my, nice pipechrome got it to my house

I installed a set of pans, front apron, and tire well, pulled the right rear out (old fashion way, come a long and a tree) motor with all tin fits nice now, de chromed, and narrowed front beam 2″

oh my…a bit saggyoh okay…niceoh 2004 Porsche Chayane white stance is just right

some rust repair and pictures of the narrowed beam and adjuster install

nastysolid babymeasure 3 times and cut once measure 3 times, cut once

This weekend (October 07) I finally got all the parts together to build the STF 2017 motor…it consists of a used $80 case (already aligned bored and cut for 90.5’s) a old Crane cam (same specs as a Engle 120), Bugpack straight cuts, used 90.5’s, used EMS 78.4 CW crank, CB Uni-tech rods , used 041 heads already cut for 90.5’s and even had 40×35.5 SS valves installed..so I whipped out the die grinder, carbides and flap wheels and had a go with them, also clearanced the case and full flowed too.. I ended up running a .070 deck with 54 cc in the head for a compression of 8.7…here’s a few pixs

motor pix motor pixmotor pixmotor pix

the headsthe headsabout done

It’s now November and the motor is done and installed, almost time for Bug Jam..BUT…..after cam break in I noticed a oil leak, thinking it was the oil cooler I pulled the motor …only to find this, yeah looks like a crack to me

oh shit, now what another shotoil on the flywheel side

Motor sounded sweet too…updates to follow

UPDATE…well it’s now December 8th and I’m building again…I broke down and purchased a Auto Linea case, high roof model to build the once known as STF motor…..There was a few mod’s I had to make before assemble

1. Distributor hole needed a hone, a bit tight

2. alignment of the oil pickup hole to oil pump was a bit off

3. case deburring

4. cut down lower sump ear (nearest rear of case) hit external oil sump, kept it from seating

5. cut down right ear that holds breast plate tin, also breast plate on left side needed clearencing as the case has a different contour than the oem case

6. Cylinder 1/2 side tin needs clearencing around bell housing area

7. Fan shroud where it meets the center of the case (high roof remember) needs a bit of clearencing also

here’s a picture of the short block

auto linea auto linea

Well the motor is done and in and I fired it up yesterday ….and little tweaking and took it on it’s main voyage ..cars dirty but took a picture of it anyway…on the motor, so far no leaks…here’s a few pictures of the American Lemans wheels, motor and birthday present from the wifey (engraved Berg shifter) and Christmas (Autometer tach) cool huh!
nicealuminum casea bit dirty but hey I drive it

Well I finally broke down and bought me a manual chain hoist… what are rafters for anyway…hey I don’t need help loading/unloading motors off the stand anymore

yeah baby yeah

Took Mr. Whitey to the dragstrip last Friday night, time slip on left is first run (my car on right side of time slip) spun all the way through first gear, launched @ 3000 rpm, next run was without fan belt, launched @ 2500 rpm… street tires and mufflers

hum

correct me if I’m wrong but it looks like 122hp with belt on and 135hp without fan belt at flywheel..car weighs 1840 with me in it….

Today Feb 29th drove Mr. Whitey to work, on the return trip home it started running weird and smelled like gas….opened the lid and this is what I found

opps opps again

I was lucky, seems the pump holder lost it’s grip and backed out, and with it came the pump squirter and filter spring….look close at the 2nd pix and you can see the spring laying on the rubber lip….man what luck

Here’s a little something I’ve been wanting to do for a while…take some pictures under the old Richeys VW sign in Winter Park. He was in business in the 70’s and the building is long gone but the vw on the pole is still there, it later was a car lot but now it just houses a few pigeons….

cool

A bit of drag racing action, ran mid 14’s that day

spanking the importsbenandme

Now that the motor is sporting a turbo it was time to run again, this time the motor is the same, just pulled carbs off and installed turbo, header, recurved distributor. I limited boost to 5psi as I’m still running pump gas and 8.5 compression

car # 9962, turbo on left slip, 36 Dells on right slip

nice huh

After a few runs and some thinking time I decided to look at some other carburation . I’ve heard good things about the Holley 2 barrels so I thought I would give the 500cfm model a look. After finding one on e bay, it got a rebuild and a Percy Adjust A Jet and boost reference power valve mod. After talking with Locash John I got some hints on what to do. I built a simple intake and all that’s left is finish the linkage and some tuning.

sweet huh another for ya

Here’s the finished install with air cleaner, I used a 6 3/8″ chrome air cleaner I had for a bugspray (2 5/8″) and cut the bottom out to fit the Holley (5 1/8″)…Then it was time to modify the hood bracket to clear the air cleaner also….So this is what I came up with on the linkage, I welded a stock Solex carb arm to the Holleys and made a bracket to attach the cable too

oh nice huh

There’s not much room but I can get the air cleaner off. I cut the hinge bottom off and welded a flat bottom to it, and welded gussets to the sides of the hinge for strength…it worked

very little room

WOW! it’s now September 08, man time flies huh….I removed the Holley and reinstalled the SU…I believe there’s still more in it before I jump ship. The Holley needed more work also and I wanted to totally redo the intake. I was having a lean spot when you would romp on it at cruising speeds, I cured that by changing the power valve from a 1.0 to a 4.5. I still did have the hesitation from idle to the transition area…I changed everything from squirter nozzles to pump cams with no luck…Okay back to the SU…I worked on the needle a bit more, it’s now down to what looks like a sewing needle…really….I’ll see if it helped, and I’ll try to get back out to the strip here in a few weeks. On the other hand I had to do something about the noise, running without a muffler was getting to me…I also freed up some ponys on the down pipe, I made it 2 1/2″ all the way to the tail pipe, before it was 2 1/2″ down to a 2″ stright pipe….man it sounds good and seems to make equal power. It’s a straight through glass pack from Summit…take a look

nice huh another angleand on car

2017 With 2 inch SU starting up

Well here it is December 08 and I have a update. Back in September I ran out at Speedworld, I updated the needle on the SU and boost referenced the regulator. Well on the second pass I hurt the motor….I limped it home and took it apart the next day. I found I cracked #3 cylinder and took out 2 ring lands in piston #3 and #4 OUCH. I thought about it a while and desided to increase the displacement to 2176cc by cutting down some 94 cylinders to fit in the hole the 90.5 cylinders once felt home. The other modifications I made was changing out the 041 heads to a pair of 044’s I had (same valve sizes) with similar round port design. Also I left the turbo off and carbs went back on, a pair of Kadron single barrel’s with Treuhaft intakes fit the bill….pix and more updates to follow.

I took the 2176 (now updated with Dellorto 40’s)  and did my first time Dyno session in Daytona, motor made 103.56 @ rear wheels with 125.12 torque

dynosession

A little schooling for you…Before I purchased my Dell’s I got these IDF Webers, they were misrepresented as Spainish versions (Thanks Adam)….but if you look closely you’ll see the difference….Here’s a few pictures of USA made Webers….which suck

usawebers-006.jpg

And this one is a Spanish Weber

oh yes I can see the difference

I had a problem with the casting and leaks from the idle adjustment screw area, there’s others also…I would avoid at all costs..

Here’s a little video I made of the DubDyno and the Rally @ WinterJam 2009 in Daytona

DubDyno video

Car on dyno

It’s now mid 2009 and I got the turbo itch again so here’s my latest buy, a turbocharger from a Mazda CX7, don’t know what I’m going to pressurize but I’ll blow through something….

turbo1turbo2turbo3turbo4turbo5

UPDATE: June 09

Well I decided to purchase a CB and connect the turbo to it, I made a new flange and reduced the collector to 2″

turbo11

turboexhaust2turboexhaust3turboexhaust4Today, I finished modifying the waste gate to fit under the turbo

wastegatewastegate1

Here it is August 09, I’m into a kitchen remodel so the turbo upgrade had to wait, but I purchased the rest of the goodies to do the install….Updates to follow

Here it is 1/20/10 and the kitchen is finished , I do have a few updates, I bought a pair of 45 Dells for the turbo motor and a set of Scat Procar seats (thanks Matt)scatseats Here it is April 2010, and the turbo is mocked up, Lester is building me a trans and well I’m doing some plumbing work….on the motor that is. I updated the heads to a pair of Scat Super D’s, and a pair of Scat Super Comp 1.25 rockers, added turbo tubes, mod rings & rubber gaskets to carbs…..

headsEric the Plumberthe carbs

More updates, it’s now 5/27/10 and the trans is done (thanks Lester) It’s got the beefy bits to hold the load, more updates to follow

Trans mixer

Well this weekend got the motor and trans in, but sprung a couple of leaks, one oil line and on checking fuel pressure this piece of crap “China” fuel/vacuum gauge decided it wanted to leak internally, fuel everywhere, thanks NAPA, I plan on visting you…but on another note, the motor started and ran nice…oh and got my tail pipe made too

tailpipe1

The motor is in and running and very well I might add, tonight (6/11/10) I decided to take it to the track to see what it can do as it’s really to loud to do any tuning on the street. One thing to remember is bring your jet pack with you…..it is a test & tune night after all isn’t it….as far as I got was an 1/8th mile pass as it leaned out and I had to let off, my car is #9962

Here’s a little vid of the motor running in the car

2176 w/boost 6/11/10

timeslip

Well I have an update, I finally got it down the 1/4 mile….a/f  this time was around 12.5  through the traps so I was good there, the outside temp was 102…yeah stinking hot,  I ran street tires, muffler, just let it cool down for a half hour….there’s the time slip…my car on right

timeslip73010

Well it had to happen sooner or later….I’m putting together a fuel injection system for the beast…oh and it will be cheap you can bet on that….I found an older Tims System controller to control fuel and will use my Megajolt for ignition. So far I made a plenum and used a $7 Ford Taurus throttle body, a set of Volvo 760 turbo injectors, and traded for a used 1 wire alternator and I’m still waiting for my high priced CB bits to make it complete….more pix to come

For the plenum I used a old oxygen tank and cut it down to fit, hey I said I was cheap…..

finishedplenum

Well it’s Oct 1st and thought I would get another few runs in before I tear it apart to do the 5 speed/EFI swap….and I must say I’m was happy as hell, the car was running flawless…I got my first 12 sec time slip tonight, and picked up 2 mph.

12sectimeslip 001

Update:  it’s now November 28th and the 5 speed is fitted, it was pretty straight forward install and with the usual mods….here’s a few pix, next efi

it will fit now

the Blue Box

Posted by volksnut  Published in The Blue Box

Well it all started after selling my truck and having a little $ in my hands and needing something to haul stuff in…..enter the bus. Well it was butt ugly and needed some wheels, well I had some in the attic so down they came and on they went. Well after several nose bleeds I decided the front end needed to come down, first the front and then the rear, at the same time I bought a set of Audi A4 wheels off e bay and after a little modifying they fit right on, 16×7’s with 205/45-16 fronts and 205/55-16 rear….it’s my daily driver too by the way so I built a 1776 with a Crane Fireball cam, K-Duds, and did a mild port job on the heads …drives nice but needed something nice to look at…..a 914 gave up it’s gauges and saved the day….Rock on dude…on a sad note I’ve decided to sell old Blue….take good care of it Steve

Junk Yard Turbo buggy

Posted by volksnut  Published in JunkYard Turbo

I built this buggy with a mild motor to tool around in up in the mountains of N.C….then later with a move back to Fla. I met some new friends over at Lo Cash…then the turbo came into the picture, many carbs were used until I fell in love with the SU carb …a roll cage was built with help from Lester and John and raced often with 12.30 @ 102 mph being it’s best…here’s some before, during and after shots…oh it made the cover of a dunebuggy book and Ultra VW magazine article too, check out Mike Key (photographer)….the car has been sold off to pay off a few bills but with always be in my heart

Early on I built this 1641 with a Zenith for it but had a problem with low oil pressure so I removed the motor from the blue car to install in the buggy…the other picture here is finishing up on the pan/chassis work down on the side of the rode below the house

love that gold por 15 nice job

Some racing shots… against the MG, well I got spanked, I did beat the Chevelle though, next you can see the Zenith 32 NDIX carb standing tall and proud, oh and my favorite….in front of the Speedworld wall (thanks John cool pix)

Here’s a few of me and Lo Cash fabbin the roll cage, we built a basic 4 point cage to race at Jax Raceway (R.I.P.) then I finished it up at home, and painted it green

ZAP!OH LALASQUIRT SQUIRTDONE

Well after all this I had to have some flash (bling to you younger fellas)…I taped off a pattern and my buddy Rob Milich did his magic

Here’s a few pictures from 2003 I found off my old site, the first is from the Lakeland race above and the second is in my carport with the T bucket buggy I was building

Then finally I found this old picture with Locash John and Lester…it’s around 2002 (note painted steel wheels)…another Lakeland event
